Revealed! Mystery Mural on Fremont Avenue

Feb 28, 2002 -- An historic mural was uncovered by workers February 18 when they stripped the siding off of the Buckaroo Tavern building at 42nd Street and Fremont Avenue. The large "Monson's" title is flanked by the word "Groceteria" in the yellow diamonds.

When we asked the bartender and patrons about it, nobody knew for sure whether the place was ever a grocery store. The bartender said that the building became a tavern in 1936, not long after the end of Prohibition, and was named the Buckaroo in 1938. Before that it was two separate businesses, which may have been a feed store and granary and a butcher shop. The building still has two front doors, and some of the interior partition wall is still holding up the top floor of apartments.

The mural will soon be covered over again when new siding is applied.

Doing our family tree and found the name of Monson possibly as a great grandparent. Just checking sites and ran accross this, beings they were in the WA area, thought I'd see if you had any suggestions. My uncle was raised in the Georgetown area though and not sure of this, he siad this was uptown.
