The retsina was flowing. The saganaki was flaming. The music was raging. The beautiful Greek women were dancing. The food was disappearing faster then Laki Kazakos could prepare it. Greek flags were waving, and colorful streamers were, well, streaming. This could only mean many things, as the Greeks can find many excuses to have a good time. But in this case it means it's Greek Independence Day! Even I was swept into the lamb eating and yelling of "Opa!"
The Kazakos family, except mother Georgia for whom the restaurant is named. She arrived at the celebration later. Zachary D. Lyons photo.

On March 25, 1821, Greece, which gave the world democracy in the first place, regained its independence after centuries of occupation. On Friday, March 22, the party was at Georgia's in Greenwood, and, oh, what a party it was. Renowned Greek folk musicians Takis Dotis and Yianis Novakis kept spirits high, while Chef Laki made tummies full. Takis owns a restaurant of his own, Taki's Pizza and Pasta in Loyal Heights.
