Washington Student Employees Win Bargaining Rights

Mar 28, 2002 -- On March 14, Governor Locke signed legislation granting collective bargaining rights to academic student employees at University of Washington. The law took effect immediately, removing a major obstacle that kept graduate student employees at UW from bargaining for better pay and benefits.

The Graduate Student Employee Action Coalition/UAW (GSEAC/UAW), with a membership of more than 75 percent of the UW teaching assistants, research assistants, tutors and other student employees, has filed for certification with the Public Employee Relations Commission. The ball is now in the court of the UW administration. Will it bargain with GSEAC/UAW?
