Fremont
Outdoor Sunday Market Coming Soon...Or Is It?
Will the Fremont Sunday Market be able to move outdoors for the summer?
|
Apr 11, 2002 --
The Fremont Sunday Market is scheduled to move out of its winter digs, in the parking garage under the Burke Building on N 34th Street, on April 28. The proposed location for the summer is on 34th Street itself, on the long block stretching from Evanston Avenue to Phinney Avenue. There's just one problem: Sound Mind & Body Gym, located just south of the site, is trying block the street use permit.
"It really comes down to an error in judgment," says Fremont Sunday Market manager
Jon Hegeman. "She [Sound Mind & Body co-owner Vicky Aldrich] didn't build in additional parking when she had the chance. She assumed public parking would always be available." The closest public parking to the gym is on 34th Street, right where the Market is planning to move. Sound Mind & Body has 72 parking spots in its own lot, but the number of members using the gym is often much higher. According to Hegeman, there are 250 free parking spots within a one-block radius of the gym that will still be available on Sundays.
Reached at the gym and asked about the street use permit for the Fremont Sunday Market, Aldrich said, "we have no comment, we have nothing to do with that."
The battle lines are being drawn as the date approaches for the Market's move. Sound Mind & Body's lawyer wrote a letter to the City of Seattle opposing the street use permit for the Market. The permit is being considered by the Special Events Committee, which, at press time, had not made a ruling.
