Maritime Festival Celebrates Ocean Lifestyle
May 09, 2002 --
The 2002 Seattle Maritime Festival is already in full swing, but there's still time to enjoy the festivities for the final weekend. The festival began on Friday, May 3 and continues through May 16.
Tonight (Thursday) comes the opportunity to enjoy the "Stories of the Seas" Maritime Poetry competition, 8 p.m. at the Highliner Tavern at Fishermen's Terminal. On Friday, there will be a forklift-driving rodeo at 3 p.m., also at Fishermen's Terminal (but not in the tavern!).
Saturday is the main day of festivities; a partial list of the fun at Bell Street Pier/Pier 66 includes:
- -- Quick and Dirty Boatbuilding, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- -- Invitational Survival Suit races, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
- -- Free harbor tours on board Argosy's Spirit of Seattle at noon and 3:30 p.m.
- -- Free admission to Odyssey Maritime Museum
- -- Sea Chantey concerts at the Odyssey Entertainment Stage, 1 - 4 p.m.
- -- Free wooden boat building for kids of all ages.
There are many other fun things to do at the Festival, as well as exhibit booths, food and games. It's all free, so bring your friends and neighbors and enjoy a Saturday of seaside fun.
