BoatingFireboat Alki comes to Lake UnionMay 30, 2002 -- The fireboat Alki is now moored inside the Hiram Chittenden Locks, thanks to fast action on the City's part. The move was prompted by a massive Lake Union marina fire on May 3, which was only brought under control after the fireboat made the hour-plus trip from Elliott Bay through the Locks. The Alki will be moored at Fishermen's Terminal. The Port of Seattle is providing free moorage, power and security, and the Fire Department will staff the boat with a marine certified engineer 24 hours a day to ensure the vessel is ready to go at all times. According to a press release from the Mayor's office, the placement of the fireboat at Fishermen's Terminal will cut response time in half for fires in Lake Union and Lake Washington.
