School District Slams Ads
Jun 20, 2002 --
The Seattle Schoool District is doing something right, according to the Citizens' Campaign for Commercial-free Schools. The District won the National Ad Slam contest, sponsored by Commercial Alert. The prize of $5,000 was awarded to the district that made the best and most creative effort to kick advertising and commercialism out of school for the past school year. Seattle won because of the Seattle School Board's decision to nix Channel One, a television show that contains commercials and is shown in classrooms every day, by the 2004-2005 year, and because of new restrictions that were placed on other forms of in-school advertising.
Commercial Alert is a national non-profit whose mission is to prevent commercial culture from subverting values of family, community, environmental integrity and democracy. Learn more by visiting www.commercialalert.org.
