Ballard Commons Loses Commercial Partner

Jun 20, 2002 -- BALLARD--Planning for a new combined library, neighborhood service center and bank branch has hit a snag, as U. S. Bancorp is expected to pull out of the deal. The 40,000-square-foot complex is scheduled to be built on the site of the U. S. Bank branch at 22nd Avenue NW and NW 57th Street.

According to Stephen Lundgren of the Ballard District Council, the writing has been on the wall ever since U.S. Bancorp merged with Firstar in January. "We're just waiting for a formal written statement that they're not interested in being partners any more," Lundgren said.

Caroline Ullman of the Seattle Public Library said the library has "received indications that U. S. Bank may decide not to exercise its option to take part" in the project, but the bank has not sent formal confirmation. "It's too early for us to speculate about any changes to the project," she said.
