Icelandic Independence Day Celebration
Ogn Kimberley Magnusson
|
Jul 04, 2002 --
On the 17th of June every year, Iceland celebrates its independence, the same way we do in America on the 4th of July. In Iceland, "Mountain Woman" or "Fjallkona" comes down from a mountain there, dressed in an elegant fur trimmed velvet cape and satin gown. She recites a poem to all the Icelanders of wisdom and love of their country.
In Seattle, a city settled 35 percent by Scandinavians, all the Nordic countries' independence days are celebrated. This year, Seattle's Icelandic Fjallkona was Ogn Kimberley Magnusson. Jon Marvin Jonsson, the Icelandic Consular General presented her. She recited a poem as well as a prayer to preserve the safety of those who go to sea, in Icelandic and English. The celebration was held on board a floating vessel on Lake Union.
