Gregoire Rejects Hanford "Quick Fix"
Jul 18, 2002 --
Christine Gregoire, Washington State attorney general, called on the Senate to fully fund the cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Eastern Washington.
Gregoire told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee that Washington citizens won't settle for less than a complete cleaning of the site. Her comments were a reaction to the Department of Energy's plan to expedite the removal. "The accelerated cleanup plan can't depend on a shortened yardstick of success," said Gregoire.
The Hanford site contains more radioactive waste than any other site in the U.S. Fifty-three million gallons of that waste are in tanks decades past their expected lifespan. At least one million gallons of highly radioactive liquid has seeped into the water table and is slowly but surely flowing toward the Columbia River.
