Jul 18, 2002 -- Central Area Community Festival

Three days of music, athletics and food--who could ask for more? Try out the batting cage, the board games and bingo (with prizes). There is live musical entertainment from noon to close every day. Check out the informational booths, like the Harborview Health Fair, the bike rodeo and the more. July 26 - 28.

Ballard Seafood Fest

There's something about the word lutefisk. But the lutefisk-eating contest is only part of the Ballard Seafood Fest. Begun nearly three decades ago as a community salmon bake, the festival is now a two-day affair with tons of entertainment--and lots of fish. Besides the traditional salmon barbecue, there is a family stage, a critically acclaimed music stage, food and crafts booths and a beer garden. This is a party that routinely sees over 50,000 visitors, some even from the East Coast and even Europe. Come and see the allure for yourself!

Pista Sa Nayon

Celebrate Filipino heritage and traditions through music, dance and food. Filipino American cuisine and arts and crafts will be touted throughout the booths. There will also be informational and community-based cultural tents. In addition, contemporary dancers and singers will appear to entertain the crowds. 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Everybody loves a parade

Parades are the thing in the coming weeks. First comes the Chinatown parade on July 21. In addition to the many entertaining groups that day, the Chinese Girls Drill Team and the amazing and colorful 100-foot Chinese dragon. Parade at 7 p.m.

Next, there's the "Ships Ahoy!" U-District Grand Seafair Parade on July 22. At the end of the festivities, 200 medals will be given out to applaud the efforts of youth who helped make the event happen. And, in collaboration with the Make-A-Wish foundation, eight-year-old Alexandra will realize her Coronation at 5:15 p.m., parade at 7 p.m.

On July 24, Greenwood will feature both a kid's parade at 6 p.m. and the grand parade at 6:30 p.m. This year's theme is "Saluting Our Heroes" with representatives from the fire department, the Seattle Police Department, the sheriff's office and each of the armed services. New this year is a food court in the Greenwood Market parking lot.

July 27 heralds the Torchlight Seafair Parade. This event features over 100 lighted floats, marching bands, drill teams, hydroplanes and giant helium balloons. The parade begins at Seattle Center, going along Fourth Avenue and ending at Seahawks Stadium. Onlookers have the choice of reserving bleacher space for $20 - 30, or can stand for free. Parade begins at 7:30 p.m.
