Back to School Shopping

Loss prevention officers at a clothing store at Northgate mall watch on the security monitor while two teenage girls walk around selecting items at 11:44 a.m. on a Friday morning. The girls leave the store for a few minutes, but then one of them returns and picks up a pile of clothes under a rack and continues walking around. She picks up a red shirt and walks toward the north exit. At the exit, she runs quickly out the doors to her friend, who is waiting in a gold Thunderbird with the motor running. A security guard follows and orders her to stop, and she runs past the car and onto 1st Avenue NE, then south. She is caught at the Metro Park & Ride lot south of the mall. The second girl is caught as she is driving around the south lot looking for her friend. Both girls are placed into custody and taken to the North Precinct. Their mothers are called and come to pick them up. The value of the clothing they stole was approximately $500…

On a Friday at 3:06 p.m., a loss prevention officer for a department store at Northgate mall observes two teenage girls take approximately two dozen lingerie garments into a fitting room. The girls exit the room carrying only two or three items, so a female loss prevention officer checks the room. Several tags have been left behind, but not the items they were attached to. The suspects pass several open registers and exit the mall doors, where the loss prevention officers stop them. The girls admit to taking the items. The female loss prevention stands by while they undress and remove the stolen items they are wearing under their clothing. Police officers contact their grandmother, who is waiting for them in the food court. She leaves to inform the girls’ father of the incident. The girls are mirandized by the police officers and transported to the North Precinct, where they are later released to the custody of their parents. The worth of the clothing they attempted to steal was approximately $375…

At 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning, a man sleeping aboard a boat moored near the Ballard Locks is awoken by footsteps overhead on the deck. He gets up to check and sees a stranger on the upper decks. He confronts the man and asks what he is doing there. The man replies, “playing hide and seek.” The witness tells the man to leave, which the suspect does. The witness sees him walk off the dock, then turn eastbound. He does not hear the sound of a car. After the suspect is gone, he notices a 20” television and six small speakers have been removed from their mounting brackets and stacked by the gangway…
