Fire destroys UW Education Outreach
Dec 23, 2002 --
AN EARLY morning fire last December 19 destroyed the Seattle campus office of the University of Washington Educational Outreach. The fire was reported to the Seattle Fire Department at about 6:10 a.m. Thursday, quickly escalating into a three-alarm blaze.
Damage is estimated at $1 million dollars.
As of December 20, students registering for winter classes with educational outreach programs can do so in person at the King Building or by calling (206) 543-2310. The main information line for education outreach (206-543-2320) is functional, as are email and phone systems. The UWEO website (www.outreach.washington.edu), however, is not operational as of Friday afternoon.
Most grades were entered in the student database before the fire, so were not affected. However, students in distance-learning classes with finals taking place after December 21 need to reschedule. They can call (206) 543-2350.
About 100 people work at the UWEO main offices, with other employees at the King Building to the south. The fire did not affect operations at the King Building.
UW Education Outreach is the division of the university that administers continuing education, distance learning, summer quarter, English language programs and other programs for non-traditional students. It handles around 34,000 registrations a year.
