| Matchstick World Trade Center by an unknown Seattle Artist, found at the Seattle Center memorial.
|
Dear Readers,
It's impossible to comprehend how much the world has changed between our first and second issues under new ownership. Before September 11, it seemed nothing was taken more seriously by more people in Seattle than the Mariners. Now sports talk show hosts openly talk about baseball as escapism and players confess how unimportant baseball is in the big picture.
Our world view has changed profoundly. The friendly skies now appear sinister, and seemingly invincible structures look as fragile as the matchstick model of the WTC at the Seattle Center memorial. Towering a full seven inches above the flowers, the matchstick WTC was easily missed in the sea of bouquets. Yet for me, it uniquely captured a profound sense of vulnerability and fragility unthinkable before September 11.
This new feeling of vulnerability has the power to unite local communities and to bring out the best in people. It can also be used for personal gain and to legitimize individual agendas. We at The Seattle Press feel that individuals, companies, and governments claiming the tragedy of September 11 as the cause of their actions must meet a very high burden of proof.
We welcome your opinions and letters on the profound questions raised by this tragedy. There has never been a more important time to be involved in your local community.
Sincerely,
Pat Wickline,
Editorial Advisor
